Eric Adams includes Indo-Caribbean residents as he prepares to lead New York City

As Mayor-elect Eric Adams prepares to lead New York City, he has tapped Indo-Caribbean residents to participate in multiple transition committees.  In an announcement on Friday, December 3rd, Adams named over 700 individuals to serve on 20 different committees saying "Each committee has been tasked with a specific set of goals and responsibilities to ensure we are ready to lead on Day 1".  The Indo-Caribbean members on the transition committee include:
  1. Rhonda Binda, the Queens Deputy Borough President, is co-leading the technology committee and serves as a member of the legal committee. Prior to being Deputy Borough President, Binda was a co-founder of Venture Smarter where she focused on the development of smart cities.  She was also Executive Director of the Jamaica Business Improvement District, and served as Deputy Director for the U.S. Department of State's Global Intergovernmental Affairs Division in both the Obama-Biden and Clinton-Gore Administrations. She lives in Queens, New York and her family is from Guyana.  You can follow her on Twitter @BindaRhonda. 
  2. Richard David is co-leading the civic engagement committee.  David is a district leader, an adjunct professor at CUNY, and he works for an energy company. David previously worked in City government for over a decade before lobbying for some of the leading nonprofits in New York. He serves on the board of directors of the Indo-Caribbean Alliance, Long Island City Partnership and the Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park.  He was born in Guyana and lives in Queens, New York.  You can follow him on Twitter @RichDavidNYC. 
  3. Saubirah Hack is co-leading the health committee.   Hack is a Director of Quality Management within the Division of Community Care at NYC Health + Hospitals where she has served in different roles for over five years. Hack was previously a special education teacher at the NYC Department of Education.  She's a member of the Muslim Democratic Club of NYC and has assisted different electoral campaigns across the City.  She lives in Manhattan, and her family is from Guyana.  You can follow her on Twitter @SaubHacks.
  4. Annetta Seecharran is a member of the immigration committee.  Seecharran is Executive Director of Chhaya CDC which works on housing issues affecting South Asian and Indo-Caribbean New Yorkers.  She previously led SAYA!, a South Asian youth organization, and was Director of Policy and Advocacy at United Neighborhood Houses. Seecharran serves on the board of the New York Immigration Coalition and was previously involved in the transition committee for Mayor Bill de Blasio.  She was born in Guyana and lives in Queens, New York.  
  5. Pandit Lakeram Maharaj is a member of the clergy committee.  Maharaj founded Shri Tulsi Mandir in 2004 and has advocated for Diwali to become a public school holiday in New York City. He was born in Guyana and lives in Queens, New York. 
  6. Pandit Baya is a member of the clergy committee. He has been a leading advocate in the Hindu community in New York City. He was born in Guyana and lives in Queens, New York. 
  7. Pandit Ram Hardowar is a member of the clergy committee.  He is the spiritual leader of the Surya Narayan Mandir and President of the Federation of Hindu Mandirs, the largest coalition of Hindu organizations based in New York City.  Hardowar is a geotechnical engineer who was born in Guyana and lives in Queens, New York. 
  8. Vijah Ramjattan is a member of the clergy committee.  Ramjattan is the founder of the United Madrassi Association, a Hindu humanitarian organization. He is also President of the Community Education Council in District 28 and works as a researcher at a leading university. Ramjattan has been a prominent advocate for Diwali as a public school holiday in New York City.  He was born in Trinidad and Tobago and lives in Queens, New York.  You can follow him on Twitter @VijahRamjattan. 
Eric Adams is poised to be sworn in as the 110th Mayor of New York City, and only the 2nd African American, on January 1, 2022.
